JOB DESCRIPTION

DIRECTOR OF CHOIRS

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Director of Choirs directs the Chancel Choir, Junior Choir and Handbell Choir and includes music selection under the leadership of the Minister of Music. This position could be divided between several individuals per their qualifications and interests.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in music preferred.

  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills working with existing staff members and volunteers.

  • Competency in rehearsing and conducting vocal and instrumental groups.

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills. Sound personal faith that guides all aspects of the position.

  • Passion and understanding of the importance of music to the worship experience and for the overall spiritual growth of the church body.

  • Continued professional development in the field of church music.

  • Knowledgeable or willing to learn proper handbell technique and teach to new and existing members.

  • Commitment to this church’s legacy that all music will be presented at a high level of quality and beauty.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Direct the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choir (Sep.-May). Weekly choir anthems for one worship service on Sunday mornings and one rehearsal during a weeknight. Chancel Choir scheduling is flexible for several Sundays off during Sep. through May. Handbell Choir to play on a regular basis.

  • Lead Junior Choir (either directly or use of volunteers) to present selections regularly throughout the year.

  • Participate on the worship planning team as necessary to coordinate the integration of music into worship (congregational hymns/responses, anthems, instrumental music, etc.).

  • Attend church staff meetings when necessary.

  • Collaborate with the Minister of Music on music selection and all musical components of worship services.

  • Prepare music for additional liturgical year services including Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve and Maundy Thursday.

Terms of Employment:

  • This position reports to the Minister of Music/Organist and covers the period September through May.

  • Average approximately 15 hours per week and be paid a salary commensurate with experience.
